Chinese New Year

Lunar new year (LNY) is celebrated around the world. It marks the start of a new lunar cycle, is one of the most important holidays in Asia. The tradition is so crucial that LNY travel is annually heralded as the world's largest human migration.

Preparations begin a month before (similar to a Western Christmas) when people start buying presents, decoration materials, food and clothing. A huge clean-up gets underway days before the New Year when Chinese houses are cleaned from top to bottom, to sweep away any traces of bad luck, and doors and windowpanes are given a new coat of paint, usually red.

On New Year’s Eve, families eat dinner in their homes fortified by red decorations. At midnight, firecrackers are sounded. In addition, people will wear new and festive red clothing to celebrate believing that loud noises and red color will ward off a lion-like monster named Nián (年).

Chinese new year is the seasons of giving. The bright red brings literal wealth in the form of red packets gifted to children and unmarried adults during the holiday. These red packetsare cash gifts that can range from a few dollars to quite hefty amounts depending on the relationship to the recipient. Employers are also expected to gift red packets to unmarried employees as a sign of gratitude.
